SUMMARY:FAU MoD Lecture: Free boundary regularity for the obstacle problem
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wed. October 11, 2023\nEvent: FAU MoD Lecture\nOrganized by: FAU MoD, the FAU Research Center for Mathematics of Data at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany)\nFAU MoD Lecture: Free boundary regularity for the obstacle problem\nSpeaker: Prof. Dr. Alessio Figalli\nAffiliation: ETH Zürich, Switzerland\nAbstract. The classical obstacle problem consists of finding the equilibrium position of an elastic membrane whose boundary is held fixed and constrained to lie above a given obstacle. By classical results of Caffarelli, the free boundary is smooth outside a set of singular points. However, explicit examples show that the singular set could be, in general, as large as the regular set. This talk aims to introduce this beautiful problem and describe some classical and recent results on the regularity of the free boundary.\nWHEN?\nWed. Since 2019 he is the director of the “FIM-Institute for Mathematical Research” at ETH Zürich.\nFigalli has won several prizes, including the EMS Prize in 2012, the 2015 edition of the Stampacchia Medal, and the 2017 edition of the Feltrinelli Prize for mathematics. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014. In 2018 he won the Fields Medal for “his contributions to the theory of optimal transport, and its application to partial differential equations, metric geometry, and probability”.\n(Prof. Figalli’s photo: © ETH Zürich – Giulia Marthaler)\nThis event on LinkedIn\n\nSee poster\nYou might like:\n• FAU MoD Lectures\n• FAU MoD Lecture: Physics-Based and Data-Driven-Based Algorithms for the Simulation of the Heart Function by Prof. Dr. Alfio Quarteroni\n• FAU MoD Lecture: From Physics-Informed Machine Learning to Physics-Informed Machine Intelligence: Quo Vadimus? by Prof. Dr. George Karnidiakis\n• FAU MoD Lecture: From Alan Turing to contact geometry: Towards a “Fluid computer” by Prof. Dr. Eva Miranda\n• FAU MoD Lecture: Applications of AAA Rational Approximation by Prof. Dr. Nick Trefethen\n• FAU MoD Lecture: Learning-Based Optimization and PDE Control in User-Assignable Finite Time by Prof. Dr. Miroslav Krstic\n_\nDon’t miss out our last news and connect with us!\nLinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram\n
