FAU MoD Lecture: Moving your robotic hand is a matter of time and practice
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Claudio Castellini
Affiliation: The Assistive Intelligent Robotics Laboratory. FAU, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany)

Abstract. Assistive devices cannot yet be controlled reliably and dexterously, because control signal produced by the user are hard to model. In this talk I argue that the solution lies not in the machine learning method, but in the quality of the data used to build the model; and that the user, our primary source of data, must be involved in a structured way. Incremental learning is my method of choice.

OUR SPEAKER

Prof. Castellini is a researcher in medical robotics, focusing on rehabilitation and assistive robotics, human-machine interfaces and interaction, and applied machine learning.

After obtaining a degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1998 at the University of Genoa, Italy, he obtained a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence (Mathematical Logic) from the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh in 2005. Soon after, he turned his attention to robotics for the disabled, spending 4.5 years as a post-doctoral fellow at the Advanced Robotics Laboratory of the University of Genoa, Italy. In 2009, he joined the German Aerospace Centre where he is currently a senior researcher and joint lab leader at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics. In 2021, he was appointed full professor of medical robotics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. There, he leads the Assistive Intelligent Robotics (AIROB) Lab and serves as Deputy Dean for Public Relations and Communication of the Faculty of Engineering.

As of now, Prof. Castellini has co-authored about 160 scientific papers, is involved in several research projects at the Bavarian, German, and European levels, and serves as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, as a board member of the International Consortium for Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR), as organiser of the ICORR YouTube Channel, and as Editor / Associate Editor for BioRob, ICNR, and RehabWeek.
